Deze opleiding werd onderbroken om onderzoek te doen. Zij promoveerde\u00a0 in 1995\u00a0 op het proefschrift\u00a0 &#8220;Respiratory muscle function and nocturnal oxygenation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease\u201d.\u00a0 Daarna werd zij opgeleid tot longarts. Sindsdien is zij staflid op de afdeling longziekten van het Radboudumc. In 2000 deed zij een jaar onderzoek bij Prof. Dr. Bart Celli op de afdeling Pulmonary and Critical Care van het St Elisabeth\u2019s Medical Center, Boston, USA. Het onderzoek naar oorzaak en gevolgen van (dynamische) hyperinflatie bij COPD pati\u00ebnten werd daar gestart.
